Quick Post: Art from the Museum: "Portrait of a Young Woman in Red"

Circa 90-120 A.D. Egypt
Venue: Metropolitan Museum of Art
Encaustic on Limewood with gilded wreath and traces of gilt on background.

This portrait from the late antiquity was small but breathtaking, haunting.

  1. This is exceptionally beautiful. These funeral portraits from Egypt, I understand, are among the first that depict a specific individual.

  2. Thank you Tim. I find her hauntingly beautiful. This piece is not very big but caught my eye. I was not even browsing this particular exhibit but was walking by on my way to another part of the museum and there she was! I agree: the pieces from this period and Fayyum are exquisite and moving. Thank you for taking the time to check out my blog and commenting! 😊
